Kidney Diagram: Cortex, Medulla, and the Urine Drainage Route

Kidney Diagram: Cortex, Medulla, and the Urine Drainage Route

Read a labeled kidney diagram from capsule and cortex to medullary pyramids, calyces and renal pelvis. Follow the drainage route and distinguish it from blood flow.

A Kidney Diagram Has Two Different Kinds of Space

A kidney diagram is easier to understand when you separate solid tissue from the spaces that collect urine. The cortex and medulla contain the working structures of the organ. The calyces and renal pelvis form a downstream collecting route. They are not interchangeable regions of one hollow bag.

Use the kidney diagram generator for an organ-level teaching draft. If the lesson is about glomerular filtration or tubular transport, move to a nephron diagram: those processes need a different scale.

Labeled Kidney Diagram: A Longitudinal Cutaway

Kidney diagram labeling the capsule, outer cortex, medullary pyramid, minor calyx, renal pelvis and ureter in a simplified longitudinal cutaway

Original AI-generated illustration; labels and leader lines by AcaDraw. Longitudinal cutaway, not to scale. Renal blood vessels, individual nephrons and surrounding organs are omitted. The image does not specify patient left or right.

The broad convex border lies away from the medial indentation. At the hilum, the renal pelvis narrows toward the ureter, and blood vessels normally enter or leave the organ nearby. The reference omits those vessels to keep the drainage route readable. That omission is a drawing choice, not a claim that urine formation occurs without a blood supply.

Capsule, Cortex, and Medulla

StructureWhat it isWhat to check in a kidney diagram
Renal capsuleFibrous external coveringKeep it distinct from the thicker cortex beneath it.
Renal cortexOuter tissue regionRenal corpuscles and convoluted tubules belong here.
Renal medullaInner tissue region organized into pyramidsLoops and collecting ducts run within it; it is not one empty reservoir.
Renal columnsCortical tissue extending between pyramidsDo not mistake every gap between triangles for a calyx.
Renal papillaTip of a medullary pyramidUrine emerges through papillary ducts into a minor calyx.

The number and shape of visible pyramids vary with anatomy and the chosen section. A simplified diagram uses a few representative pyramids and exaggerates boundaries. Counting the triangles in this illustration is not a way to determine a person's nephron count or kidney function.

The Urine Drainage Route

After fluid has passed through the tubular and collecting system, urine drains through the following sequence:

Papillary ducts → minor calyx → major calyx → renal pelvis → ureter → bladder.

A minor calyx cups a papilla. Several minor calyces converge into major calyces, which lead toward the renal pelvis. The pelvis is a funnel-shaped collecting region, and the ureter is the muscular tube carrying urine toward the bladder.

This is a drainage sequence, not the entire story of urine formation. A large arrow from cortex to pelvis can hide the microscopic work that happens between those locations. If you include it, define it as a broad summary rather than a literal open channel cutting across renal tissue.

Urine Flow Is Not Blood Flow

The renal artery brings blood to a branching vascular system. Glomerular capillaries allow water and small solutes to cross a filtration barrier into capsular space. Cells and most plasma proteins normally remain in the bloodstream. Blood then continues through the efferent arterioles and associated capillary beds before returning through the venous system.

The renal pelvis is not a vessel through which blood gets “cleaned.” Nor does all incoming blood become urine. Much of the filtered water and many useful solutes return to the circulation through reabsorption; selected substances also enter tubular fluid through secretion.

The nephron parts and filtrate-flow guide explains those directions. For circulation at the cardiac scale, the heart diagram is a separate reference.

Four Labeling Errors to Catch

  1. Ureter versus urethra. The ureter connects kidney to bladder. The urethra carries urine from the bladder to the exterior.
  2. Pyramid versus calyx. A pyramid is tissue; a calyx is a collecting cup next to a papilla.
  3. Cortex versus capsule. The capsule is a covering, while the cortex is the outer tissue region below it.
  4. Pelvis versus filtration site. The pelvis collects urine; microscopic renal corpuscles initiate filtration.

Choose an organ view first, then add labels at that scale. A single kidney diagram cannot resolve capsule thickness, individual tubule walls and the glomerular filtration barrier equally well. Use a separate inset for microscopic structures and state which details the main illustration omits.

Build a Teaching Draft With a Clear Scope

Request a longitudinal kidney diagram with capsule, cortex, medullary pyramids, calyces, pelvis and ureter. Add blood vessels only if you also provide a key distinguishing blood from urine flow. Ask for noncrossing leader lines and a caption stating the view and simplifications.

The kidney diagram generator offers an illustrated starting draft or an editable shape-based version. Generation requires an account and credits. Review the anatomy and every connection before using the result in a lesson; the AI output is not a clinical reference.
