Prepare a JPG for a cleaner SVG result

JPG is a lossy format designed for photographs and compact image delivery. It can still be a useful SVG source for scans, figures, and diagrams, but compression noise and soft edges need more attention than they do in a lossless PNG.

Start with the least compressed JPEG

Repeated saving introduces blocks, ringing, and color noise around text and lines. Use the original camera export, scan, or highest-quality JPEG available rather than an image downloaded from a messaging app or repeatedly recompressed online.

Clean compression artifacts first

Artifacts near labels and high-contrast edges can be mistaken for real shapes. Crop unnecessary areas, improve contrast carefully, and remove visible speckles or halos before conversion when the JPG contains a technical figure or scanned diagram.

Know when photos are a poor vector target

A photograph contains continuous tones and thousands of color transitions, so converting every detail to paths often produces a complex SVG. Results are more useful when the JPG contains a diagram, screenshot, logo, scan, or object with clear boundaries.

Do not expect transparent backgrounds

JPEG does not store transparency. Remove or isolate the background before conversion if you need a transparent SVG, and inspect pale backgrounds carefully because compression can leave edge pixels around the main subject.
