Animal Cell Diagram (Labeled)

The diagram below shows a typical animal cell in cross-section. Every label on the figure is listed beneath it with a one-line function, so you can check the diagram against the list in either direction.

Labeled animal cell diagram showing the cell membrane, nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, lysosomes, and centrioles
Labeled animal cell diagram. No cell wall or chloroplasts; lysosomes and centrioles are visible.
Cell Membrane
Semi-permeable barrier that controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Nucleus
Control center that stores DNA and coordinates the activity of the cell.
Nucleolus
Dense region inside the nucleus where ribosomes are assembled.
Mitochondria
Generate most of the cell's energy (ATP) through cellular respiration.
Rough ER
Protein-transport network studded with ribosomes; folds and ships proteins.
Smooth ER
Makes lipids and breaks down toxins; has no attached ribosomes.
Lysosomes
Sacs of digestive enzymes that recycle waste and worn-out organelles. Especially common in animal cells.
Centrioles
Paired cylinders that organize the spindle during cell division. Found in animal cells but absent from most plant cells.
Golgi Apparatus
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins for delivery inside and outside the cell.
Ribosomes
Tiny particles that build proteins following instructions from the nucleus.

Beyond the ten labels

Other Structures in an Animal Cell

Courses usually require the ten labels above, but these three structures also appear in most animal cell diagrams and are worth knowing.

Cytoplasm
The jelly-like fluid that fills the cell and holds the organelles in place; many metabolic reactions happen here.
Cytoskeleton
A network of protein filaments that maintains the cell's shape and moves organelles inside the cell.
Peroxisomes
Small vesicles that break down fatty acids and neutralize harmful molecules.

How to Tell an Animal Cell Diagram at a Glance

Three structures never appear in an animal cell and two almost always do. Check before you label — most lost marks come from adding plant-only structures.

How it works

Make your own animal cell diagram

  1. Step 1

    Describe the animal cell

Say which organelles to label and how detailed the diagram should be.

  2. Step 2

    Generate the labeled diagram

The generator draws a clean animal cell with leader lines and clear labels in textbook style.

  3. Step 3

    Refine and export

Check every label, ask for corrections, then export for worksheets, slides, or papers.

FAQ

Animal cell questions

What does a labeled animal cell diagram show?+

A labeled animal cell diagram shows the cell membrane, nucleus and nucleolus, mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, lysosomes, and centrioles — each named with a leader line. It never shows a cell wall or chloroplasts, which belong to plant cells.

What are the parts of an animal cell?+

The ten parts most courses require are the cell membrane, nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, rough ER, smooth ER, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, lysosomes, and centrioles. The diagram above lists each part with its function.

How do I label an animal cell diagram?+

Identify every organelle before drawing any lines, place labels outside the cell balanced left and right, draw thin straight leader lines that never cross, and finish with a spelling check against a reference. Our How to Label an Animal Cell tutorial walks through each step with a printable checklist.

Does an animal cell have a cell wall or chloroplasts?+

No. Cell walls and chloroplasts are found only in plant cells. An animal cell is enclosed by the cell membrane alone, and the large central vacuole of plant cells is absent or small in animal cells.

What is the difference between an animal and a plant cell diagram?+

The plant cell diagram adds a rigid cell wall, green chloroplasts, and a large central vacuole; the animal cell diagram shows lysosomes and centrioles instead and looks rounder and more irregular. The full side-by-side comparison is on our cell diagram page.

Can I create my own labeled animal cell diagram?+

Yes. With AcaDraw you describe the animal cell you need — organelles to label, style, level of detail — and the generator creates a labeled diagram you can refine and export. The free plan is enough to try it; free-plan exports include a watermark.

How this page was prepared

The diagram and the one-line organelle functions follow standard introductory biology references, including OpenStax Biology 2e and the NCBI Bookshelf. The figure is a product-generated teaching draft; it has not been independently peer-reviewed, so check anything critical against your course materials.
